Are You Prideful?

Psalms 10:4
The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

When you look in a mirror, what do you think? If it's first thing in the morning, you probably say, "Oh, how awful I look"! Then, when you have your face washed, hair brushed and styled, make-up on (if you wear any), you then say, "Okay, I'm presentable now"! You feel better and are ready to face the day. Then you go about your daily routine, barely giving a thought as to what you look like.

Now, I'm addressing this mostly to women, as this is the majority who read my blog. If you look in the mirror and take excessive amounts of time to fix yourself and while you are doing this, you are thinking about all the compliments you might get that day, especially from the opposite gender, then something is terribly wrong. You revel in the looks you get, and it doesn't matter to you if it's coming from a married man or not. You are dressing and fixing your face in order to attract attention. Again, this is wrong! Your thoughts are more on yourself than on God. You are actually setting yourself up as your own idol and you want others to worship you.

Are you surprised that someone would actually say these things!? Well, it's the truth and you know it, as well as I do. I use to be that kind of person. (Did I just hear an intake of breath from you?) I am speaking from experience. If this hasn't ever happened to you, then I'm very happy for you! Truly!

After I gave my all to God, there were struggles to change these thoughts. I wanted my life to reflect Jesus and not me. He loved me and died for me even when I was this horrible, prideful person who rarely gave Him a thought. But since my resolve was to let God have His Will in my life, I had to fight my flesh by running to God each time. I would pray to Him and ask for His help in overcoming these thoughts and desires. I would open my Bible and start filling my mind with His Words. Instead of fulfilling the flesh, I poured His Word into my mind. I would also start singing hymns and getting my thoughts totally on Him. He never failed me and hasn't yet. You have to let go of the things you use to watch, listen to, and indulge in and replace them with the good, pure things of God. You will not be sorry you did, for God blesses obedience. He wants us to turn from our prideful, sinful ways and come to Him for our every need and fulfillment.

As I've said before, this is an on-going battle and will continue until the Lord calls us home. He has given us His Weapons to fight with and we need to use them.

The desire in my heart is to first see people saved, but then to give them the help they need in walking the walk of the Christian in this sinful world. It is SO important to change the people you surround yourself with, after becoming a Christian. You need to find a God-fearing church and befriend those Christians in your community. Your old friends will give you a hard time and try to make you feel guilty for not being with them and doing the same sinful things you use to do. You'll be talked about behind your back, you'll be called names, but I have yet to know anyone but Jesus who suffered the way He did for us.

It saddens me to see the look on some peoples' faces. They consider themselves cool. Yeah, and I thought I was one of those cool people at one time, too. Now, when I see these people, they just seem ridiculous to me. How must they look to God?

The list of verses below are very serious. It shows how much God hates a proud look. It also tells us plainly what to expect if we have this proud look. You can be 100% sure that you will be brought low. You will become so embarrassed at your fall, because you thought yourself invincible.

Being proud also means that there is going to be someone you will look down on. As God is no respecter of persons, so should we. In this world are people that are famous. The majority of us are non-famous and when we have an opportunity to meet a famous person, we feel so proud to have met them, gotten close enough to them, maybe even get an autograph or picture with them. This really shouldn't happen with Christians. I'm guilty, aren't you? The first thing you want to do is to tell everyone that you met so-and-so! You are setting them up to envy you. This isn't right!

What about people in the ministry that have become famous? I believe God gives them a thorn in their side to keep them from being puffed up, just as Paul received a thorn. Some have fallen though and it is very difficult for anyone to listen to what they have to say anymore. Very sad, indeed. However, if they kneel before the cross and ask forgiveness, and we know God forgives, then we, too, should forgive.

2 Cor 12:7
And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
2 Cor 12:8

For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
2 Cor 12:9

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Christians are to seek after God and have God in all our thoughts. If you have succumbed to the worldly ways and things of this world, then you have backed away from God. I agree it is not easy being a Christian. The world offers so many things that are tempting to us. Many of which seem harmless, but if it is taking your time away from seeking God and taking your mind away from thinking about God, then you have placed an idol before Him.

If each of us would take more care in reading God's Word and having Him in our thoughts continually, then we would grow more fruit in order to help those that are still starving. Instead of looking down at them, we would feel the need to spread God's love to them and help them to see that they are loveable. Most mean people want to hurt others, because they have been hurt. If you are full of God's love, you will want to love others.

The Scriptures below aren't in order and I'm sorry, but I looked up "pride" and then, "proud". In reading them, you will see that God hates a proud look and we really need to keep away from this.

Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Rom 1:30

Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
Rom 1:32

Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

You are so right !It is so easy to become over prideful,
we are to be proud in serving God... but when we turn that pride into ourselves it becomes a burden and sin
I have to be constantly on guard against my having too much pride also.
thank you for this reminder...
